The one before the one

When your life starts coming together

The one who you will start to remember
When you see your own child meet someone similar
You will warn them and they won't listen
For they aren't the one your mother hates
They are just the one you never fully loved
They were there for the journey
but the destination is not for them
That's the one whose love makes logical sense
Yet they are the one you never feel a spark for
You adore them and wish them well
Yet you are the one who hurts them more than anyone else.
They are the monster you never get to see destroy
Because you have to build yourself up
