On Rilke's New Year's Wish
On Rilke’s New Year’s Wish.
“And now let us believe in a long year that is given to us, new, untouched, full of things that have never been...”
Shall we believe
the year ahead
is destined to be filled
with joyous things
that we have never known
or seen?
That what is yet to come
will never leave us parched
forlorn
undone
as this past year,
as unbecoming
and travailed
with tribulation and with trial was,
that hope has any chance
to glimmer still
and grow?
Oh friends,
I pray that it be so.
I’m tired and drained of energy
by last year’s harrowings,
and ravagings of mounting age,
by pleasuring’s delays.
I cannot bide
another ounce
of woe.

Thank you for saying so. But as I've said before, what I want from those who respond to my submissions is not so much their reaction to the tone or the "message" of any submission I make, but an articulate critical analysis of how and why my submissions do or do not display poetic art and do or do not achieve my purpose of bringing a reader inside and ex[perience -- or as L. Pastan said do what a poem is supposed to do, namely, male a reader see with his/her eyes shut.
