EXQUISITE SCRAWL

color
outside the lines,
sweet girl

naked
in the half light
so that i see
your bright soul
and its every bruise
and blemish
and every place
the whip came down
or knuckles turned
its pale flesh blue
or glass
slid ragged
across a vein
because there isn't
much pretense
here
and christ knows
i know
this pain
and see me
in your words
and see you in me
and maybe sometimes
you don't think your words
are much
but, goddamn, girl...

i wish i could say it
half as strong

Author's Note
I wrote this a few weeks ago for a comp and intended it to honor a certain poet, and then thought it would embarrass her because some would read it as me calling her a victim, and so I deleted it. I'm really talking here about violence inflicted on a sensitive soul. I know what that feels like. I am not one for violence of any kind.
