Rare Spring Vitality

This was for a competition.

Florida has two full seasons
Cold and Hot; Winter and Summer
but rare moments of cool spring
happen for short days
rare days of enchantment, possibility

the possibility of a single rose
in hand of a single man
standing on gravel walk
surrounded by trees with leaves dying from winter
bushes budding with flowers of spring vitality

Only spring coolness could bring such a face
to smile at you, sit beside you
simply words exchanged, no punch or pick up
only lines that would bring you to the park,
this bench, every lunch break, ever Saturday,
every evening until dinner plans are made

Dinner plans, second dates, kisses,
meeting friends, believing
this will last through summer heat,
fleeting crisp fall, dark cold winter,
moments of blooming spring and back through the cycle again
til when you exchange rings in Florida spring

But those moments are rare, and he is a stranger
with a friendly smile giving you a rose
because his spring love missed a summer date
and you missed the window of opportunity
why does reality have to change people
why can't they live in the rare moments of spring
