Please, Don't Let Them Take Me Away
“Please, Don’t Let Them Take Me Away”
There is a voice that I have heard before tell me a lie
From somewhere long ago that I do not know
I told you I was sorry for what you had done
And I’d beg you to forgive me ‘till the day that I die.
Please, don’t let them take me away again,
I don’t want to hurt myself when you wouldn’t cry,
And beg the dead to take me home where you have gone—
The walls are cold, and they don’t let me look at the sky.
I told you we’d be here Forever if it only had been
A day away from the shelter of another life’s sun.
I took the stars into my eyes but still I would never die
Though scars of your heartbeat remain on my skin,
I vowed to cut only where it hurts where you say goodbye.
I burned the moon; I drank the lights from the sky
For your smile, and I never heard you ask why.
I thought you knew I kissed my death for you.
I told you that I would take care of myself,
Told you as though I spoke to someone else—
You were not there, but you stood beside me
Saying what was lost was a loss meant to be.
Please, don’t let them take me away again,
I don’t want to go where the sun’s never been—
The parts of me that died are buried at rest
Part with the damned, and part with the blessed,
I’ll only lie awake ‘till you say to sleep
I’ll only cry when you say to weep.
Please, don’t let them take me away…
