Nothing Makes Sense
nothing makes sense tonight
simple addition challenges
a lifetime of mathematical dogma
ethical dilemmas
are out on life’s highway
trying to thumb a ride
as Plato rolls over
in his cave
and shadow puppets gambol
on the rock walls
trying to make a point
to the troglodytes
I have watched
the green planet
comparing paint samples at lowe’s,
subtle greens giving way
to the latest earth colors,
blasted burnt umber
scorched ecru about the edges
a hint of charcoal to top it off
and made tree-hugging
resolutions by the score today
signed petitions to save rainforest here
marginal grasslands there
to the point of feeling almost holy,
scraping up shiny promises lightly proposed,
casually discarded
capriciously making sense
and taking it away
making a difference vs doesn’t really matter
duking it out for ratings
a rear nekkid-chokehold kinda day.
SNL was a drag
and the jokes just weren’t funny
my girlfriend didn’t visit
and wah-wah-wah
and kim left pete
and i haven’t written a poem
in ten days or so
and I’m starting to think
I’ll never write another
Which is okay
I suppose
because nothing makes sense tonight
with the greens turning brown
and the koala bears so cutely catching fire
and the icebergs melting
in which case 2+2=5 starts to make sense.
which makes no sense:
the 800 pound conundrum in the room
also starting to smoulder and smoke
but what makes more sense
than anything
is that I am sitting through
coming attractions
with a bag of fake buttered popcorn
waiting for some deranged asshole
to enter a side door with an ak-47
with my ass on fire
and start popping rounds
while James cordon
rolls credits
and the face of george soros
appears onscreen and we all start screaming
for two minutes
and I finally begin to understand:
Oceania has always been at war
with east Asia
war is peace, hate is love
time to kick back
and watch it all
come down
making perfect sense
at last
