Syrian Screams

Syrian Screams

Read the faces that remain
To view the voice
That screams the very strains
Of labored choice
To know what will will be –
The life they seek,
Or penned pieces once thought free
From rights to speak.                        (8)

From where stems fervor felt
From the street’s sounds?
But beneath searing melts
Of frigid rounds
Fired from faith’s aimed guns
Across altars
Of opposing eyes stunned
To see God’s scars.                        (16)

But life leaves their pocked land
To settle scores,
While what might makes right stands
To oppose more
Than the words heard by who
Obeys oaths pledged
To the lords that let stew
Awe acknowledged.                        (24)

Who has starved the guns fired
From heights had here?
And who feeds the fight mired
In waves of fear?
Who amassed the alarm
To connect dots
Time thought had stemmed from arms
Silence begot?                              (32)

The awful answer some think
Will win or lose
Clashes that savage – that numb
What publics choose
Does delay hatreds had
Through sons of sons
‘til what shows be what mad
See what they’ve done.                        (40)
