A Star Within the Rain

“A Star Within the Rain”

I watched the door close between us
To sever the soul that intwined our being.
This was goodbye…
Without speech—with distance only…
I wept not, for such great speech
As a tear can bring was muted
By the cry of our unborn years splitting,
As all that may have come to pass for us
Was undone…the river of our time, severed,
As we flow to our separate seas.

Do you not know you were the answer?
The question I never dared to ask—
I dare not breathe it now into
The space where you once stood.
A phantom stirs: a dream eager to reply
With what I long to hear…
Had I only strength to listen.

I become your void…that darkness…
To be the same nothingness I now occupy
Inside of you, where once I was light,
While you remain a star within the rain
Upon my face, where tears are not enough.

All those tomorrows that we destroyed,
Now days that lie before me in the unknown.
I am afraid. Sleepwalking the road without you.
Dreaming of a future denied.
Alone with the tears that are not enough
In the silence of the rain.
