Holding Still

Feeling darkness
my historic lore
resting in my bones
trauma keeps score

Smothering the light
disarming my belief
perpetual mourning
no relief

Haunting visions
innocence didn’t last
silent invasions
confronting my past

And fractured by
secrets unspoken
harrowing memories
but never broken

In resilience
I shall rise
as I am more
than unheard cries

Finding solace
from within me
self-forgiveness
will set me free

Fault not mine
I see now I’m grown
the shame I carried
not for me to own

No longer masking
all I am feeling
holding still
as I am healing
