Heart

Heart

Lost in a deep gaping hole
I slip my hand inside
The slippery mucous is warm
I just can’t seem to reach it

Far below it simmers in anger
Angry for being left alone
“Alone is what you wanted!”
I scream through my wrenching sobs.

Still, I stretch and wiggle my fingers
So close to grasping the treasure
So far from understanding why
Why it is hidden from the world

Weary, my arm goes slack
But I can feel the vibrations from below
Thump, thump, thump
Shall I plunge into the abyss?

Diving for the long lost treasure
Like a pirate, I growl and grow impatient
My finger strokes the muscle
If only I could just take hold of it

Drained I pull my arm to its trunk
Looking in, it quivers and rocks
Taunting and teasing me
But it is not for me to take today

Lost in a deep gaping hole
I look in, full of spite
It is red with life and blue with potential
I just can’t seem to reach it
