We Shan't Go

I hear the tiny voice through the trees,
of you, of me; do not ask why.
The night wraps us in its blanket of promise
and we have multitudes of choices to make
and answers call in the evening lull
as mist upon our faces falls;
when but now, or where, but here
no, do not ask why.

Let us walk, our feet finding a way,
let us tread into the longest night unaware
until it's day, as far as we dare,
no, do not ask why.

I fancy I have been here awhile,
seeing every kind of smile,
every grin that knowing bears;
every innocence we can't repair,
no, do not ask why.

I won't go nor take you there,
my sweetest one, we shan't go there
into cacophony's dim array
devoid of necessary cares.
Shall we let go, or hastily greet
one the other on the street
no, it shouldn't be so vaguely
pedestrian an autoclave.

You and I must only meet
if we dare to each undo the other's woes
each unfriend the others foes
come what may and go what must
in time every earthly trust
will our wishes unreprove
and in haste our hesitancy remove.

To that peak so we shan't go
those searing heights under which
we rest below, here in clarity
here in calm, here in purpose,
arm in arm as we jaunt along to find a way
awkward moments flit and play,
yet on our laurels do not rest,
and of our sensibilities do not test.

It matters neither here nor past
come nor gone nor seen at last,
given why or whence held fast
heard afar by some great mass.

Earth alights and holds us here
time delights and dulls our fears.
Let's be on, our faces forth
as fate responds so we go towards
and two steps back should us so right
setting us straight before the night.
