i sweep clean
the temple garden
as Your visit is
made known today.
i am asked to be
aware and in know
of all You may
wish of me to show
and so gladly
with much of heart
i plunge to redo
a spring in haste
the wispy weeds
i neatly pull
i comb the moss
and trim the shrubs
the fence I mend
and drain the pipes
i shower and water
every growth of green
autumn leaves, i rake
them afar, out of sight
in a heap, to be scorched
after You leave
i crawl and crop and exult
all herewith to bloom
keeper of riotous pattern
i shove and dig and prune
each sprout i coax
and tend and tame
with no askance
of any ache or woe
a gladsome garden
of true delight
i fashion forthwith
with swiftest stride
bursting blossoms
and flourishing fruits
pluvial petals of
perennial peonies too
a garden of envy
perfectly pruned
midway between
vain and honest pride
after much wait,
the Master is here
trampling unheeded
ah! here You come
through impish glee
You continue toward
the cherry tree
and shake it hard
helplessly, i watch with
empty mouth, as You
bestrew littered leaves
even more around anew.
