A Rock is just a Rock

I was staring at a rock
just a simple rock
no veins of quartz
nor any gold
not very original
maybe a little flat on one side
smooth and polished
by the river's edge
but still just a rock to throw away
and then I thought
this is a perfect rock
imbued with rockness
It's meaning and intent plain to see
but what of my meaning
as I weighed the rock's intent
am I an arrow or a bow
or a boomerang
always to return
repeating the same mistakes

 Yet these are just words
and they are not me
desperately I want more than words
I want goals to define meaning
and actions to determine my intent
so I've kept the rock
to remind me of all I've forgot
looking at it often
in hopes this rock will speak
but the rock is just a rock
as I'm just a man
the question remains
what kind of man do I want to be
and the answer is
I don't know
but I'll start with love, honesty, and courage
to see how far that takes me
and maybe, just maybe
when god picks me up
at the river's edge
he will see my meaning and intent
and keep me around for a while
