To Our Own Detriment
cold and remembering those
bitter beginnings,
when flames in his eyes
burned the oxygen
from the room;
yet she could not long
resist the light she saw there
dancing upon forest floors,
lichen and moss-rich carpets
lay before her in splendor;
she justified her choosing as
women like her always do,
with slow smiles curving
up one side of their mouths,
just knowing they’re the ones
with what he needs, and
who will finally sooth
the fiercest of his fires,
until it is they who bear
the ugly scars instead
