For David

Grandma said God took you
and you would become an angel
But you were better for me alive
My only child, my star of David
Three months I've cried

But God ignores me
since that day I gave him thanks
for giving me a baby boy
I must not have said it right
Because god wasted no time
Snatching you so fast

If God were a man
He would be hanged
for all the children he steals

How can grandma worship you
On the day I'm repainting your room
I'm sorry David if its too soon
For God to fit you for wings
How good can baby birds
learn to fly without their mother

But god thought you were ready
I guess he has taught so many
I wanted to teach you my own way
And I could watch you soar

But now I have to wait
Until my time to go
and see how you turned out
I hope an eagle is your spirit animal
Because I saw one today
It stared at me from the fence post
The wind lifted its tail feathers
and ruffled its wings
but it wouldn't go

I wanted to reach for it
But was afraid it would fly away
Like you did
When god sent the wind for you
