In Your Eyes
“In Your Eyes”
I can’t see past what I am in your eyes—
I can’t see past what I am in your eyes—
But I also cannot see what there lies,
For I am blinded by the shadow
That resonates with their enkindling glow.
There is no kiss, there is only love
Behind my eyes, in the terror of
What it is that you only see
When the god within you pities me.
I cannot see beyond the light that dies
When I look into the depths of your eyes
Where once before I kissed away your tears
And whose god no prayer ever hears,
But whose divinity in sorrow reappears—
Whose thunderous vault has raged all these years…
I see you in the wake of all your fears.
In your eyes, I see the clouded heaven clears
When you look on me, as if with terror
But no eyes ever were fairer
Than thine when they gazed into mine.
I cannot see beyond what I am to you,
And I do not know if what you see is true.
I cannot kiss the tears that fall today,
For when we meet, you turn your gaze away
And how I long. How I ache to say
That from you, these eyes do not stray,
And though He hears not, to that god I pray
That we shall look, as we may,
And see the light long misplaced
In the trials and terrors we have faced
And in your eyes, I will see faith in form and hue.
Yes…I see shall see me as I see you.
