The Turning Away

I could teach
A master class
In losing one's
Audience
I wouldn't even
Have to try
Very hard
Just pour my
Stream of consciousness
On to the page
And watch em run
Oh the Turning Away!

I guess it's to be expected
When your primary
Social circle
Gives it to ya
Straight no chaser
Sober as a loon
They say things like
"Sit down and shut up
Take the cotton out
Of your ears
And put it
In your mouth
Keep it simple, stupid"

After a while
You build up
Repressed resentments
Until one day
An innocuous comment
Sends you spiraling
Word vomit
On an innocent victim
Only looking for pretty words

How did I get so skilled
At this feat of social ineptitude
Take a cup full of insecurities
Boil in a pot of fermented failures
For 32 years
Sprinkle in some herbal excuses
And serve on multiple dishes
Of unofficial diagnoses
Voila!
Enough to feed
A family of six
With plenty to go around

The twisted part is
There is a voice
In the back of my head
That warns me
Of the consequences
Of my brazen outbursts
It just gets drowned out
By the overwhelming
Sense of purpose
And the need to be real

Wear a mask long enough
And eventually you lose
Your identity
