“there’s nobody living here, now,” he said,  
“the previous owners are both of ‘em dead,  
and I’m just the doorman.” I  
scratched my head.  
“will you enlighten me then, my good man,  
 
on who it is that now pays your wages?”  
“I can’t rightly say that I can, nor I can,”  
says the doorman, “there’s been nowt for ages,  
not since,” he mused, “the old master dropped dead ..”
