CONJURE THE MUSE

muse don't like
no quitter
baby -- no --
she likes ink and angst and sweat
likes stupid words and paper wadded,
spilling out the can
likes to see her bitches work
looking for words they can't find
and finding all the wrong ones
and thinking goddamn i ain't no writer, i ain't no poet
yet there you sit typing
walking that lonely road
and wishing you were smarter and better and had more talent
and damn, mama,  what the fuck am i doing
wasting my time pretending i'm something i'm not
and then finally she come
easy
like an angel on your shoulder blessing you with something good
something what writes itself
and jumps off that fucking page
and slaps you right across your stupid joyful genius face
and goddamn you know it's good
but god knows you had to work for it

Author's Note
I heard a Radio Lab on NPR in which an author said inspiration was an entity that had to be wooed, and that this entity likes to see a writer or artist hard at work, trying, and that she blesses such artists -- finally -- with flashes of genius. The author quoted Tom Waites on his rituals to woo and cajole stubborn efforts that are reluctant to manifest. She talked about other artists' creative struggles. Obviously, I enjoyed that show.
