The Day Your Soulmate Dies

No flowers
he would have said
No fussing over me
Lose the hollow heart clichés
grinning like clowns
queuing their lines in your head
Don't be married forever
to shame or regret
failure and guilt flying hand in glove
with the clocks that burn your eyes
Get out and live
taste the first cold beer
on a dusty road
drink a virgin moon
peeping through clouds
feel the last cut of the saw
before the tree
comes crashing down
All of these and more
are what he wants for you
not empty ever after
or the loneliness
you don't deserve
the day your soulmate
dies
