So Great a Distance

Flesh once buzzing with life
turns to vapor.

No angels sing.
Few voices cry.
In others are only whispers.

Seven-thousand miles away
the soft whimper of a young girl
fills her darkened room.
Her fingers touch the flame he treasures,
and she dreams of her brave soldier’s return.
