The In Between

I am caught in the in between.
Not quite the crucifix,
Yet hardly a menage a trois,
I'm somewhere between heaven and hell.

The visions in my mind battle:
Brutal bloody death filled scenes
Where the corpses lie at rest
Embraced in one another's arms,
Friend and foe alike.

Like fleeing Sodom and Gomorrah,
I must run and never look back.
The flames leaping from the bodies
Cast beaming orange lights on my path.

The last meager spirit of me,
The me that is no longer to be,
Cries in my ear
Like a pain slut depraved
Until the last bit of her is licked away
And fallen to ash.

Here I am in the in between,
Naked and nameless,
Stripped of all that is me.
I'll scrub my skin raw
Until there is nothing left
Of yesterday's shame.

In time, I will sit back, smile,
And realize I have emerged
Glowing, growing, and knowing.

For now, I sit in my flesh prison
Feeling like nothing more
Than a mundane blob
Without my demon cohorts.

For now, I put one foot
In front of the other.
Walking my way through
This lonely, vacant in between.
