Father and Estranged Son

When such a bond exists no more, has died,
 a father’s feelings, obverse to sublime,
 his mind’s submerged below the Plimsoll line,
a happy past no longer serves as guide.
A burnt out bridge, close kin on either side,
 the gulf dividing, widening with time,
 of failed relationships, a paradigm,
with no restorative to be applied.
  For everything he has and has not done
  the father blames himself; reproved by son.
   Fond thoughts and good intention don’t suffice,
   we need both wills, both him and me to splice
    and join this once tight bond of parenthood;
    his lacks – finality now understood.
