Where I Was
I was in a school assembly when I heard.
Sat cross-legged on the floor,
near the back-left doors because
the older kids always sat at
the rear of the assembly hall. We were
a sea of green in our school uniforms.
A girl started crying and had
to be let out. Her uncle may or
may not have been in one of the towers.
That’s my only memory of September,
2001, the month when our
millennium truly began.

It's definitely more impactful for those of us who lost friends and family in that tragedy, Jack. Yet it was so impactful, it's still remembered by the world. The messages from other countries standing in solidarity were so heartwarming in light of such a tragedy. Thank you for remembering.

Like the seating observation in the 1st stanza; like the lone detail of the girl.
When you write the "day was bright on our green uniforms," I don't know what it means.
I understand you're inside, so "day" doesn't refer to sun, yes? Unless there're windows....
You may mean the uniforms were bright green...?
Or you may mean something else entirely--that's what I suspect.

I actually mean less than you expect! I just remember the day as being bright, and our school jumpers were the colour green.
