Let's Take the Boat Out

If we took the boat out
Round about midnight
When the moon just a highlight
On the surface of the lake

The only sounds were night birds
Crickets and frogs in invisible herds
And the only sound was water
Licking our boat and paddle

We could call that, those times,
When we lay back and think
Remember, those nights,
The lake black as ink.
When the color of the water
Matches the sky
And we can’t tell the difference
Between you and I.

If we took the boat out
And made memories in the twilight
Created from night air and stars white
So that everything was just right

The only flavor was the night air
Honeysuckle and hyacinth
And the taste of your lips
Lingering on my hips

We could call that, those times,
When we lay back and think
Remember, those nights,
The lake black as ink.
When the color of the water
Matches the sky
And we can’t tell the difference
Between you and I.

If we only,
Took the boat out.
