Shipwreck

SHIPWRECK
(inspired by A Shipwreck in Haven by Keith Waldrop)

Are we symmetrical in the dark
Two arms, two legs, two eyes
One beating heart
Can you hear it
It’s so loud
Preparing for the memory
10 fingers, 10 toes, 22 square feet of skin
Melted into One body
Can you feel it
It’s so full

Have we been here before
Listening to remnants of the past
Pieces of clouds that pass
Begging to relax
Don’t go too fast
Make the moments last

Are we balanced even in the dark
Two halves each of two souls
One well lit path
Can you see it
It’s so bright
How far into the desert had we gone
10 feet, 20 feet, 50 hours away
Until the heat overtook us
Can you feel it
Pulsing

Have we been here before
Listening to remnants of the past
Pieces of clouds that pass
Begging to relax
Don’t go too fast
Make the moments last

You’ve shipwrecked into my body
Pieces strewn about
How well do you know yourself
What you’ll leave and what you’ll take
We’ve never been here before
But we’ll listen to the remnants of each other
Picking through the ashes and the dust
That settle and beg you
Relax
Don’t go too fast
Make the moments last
