I've always felt it was connection to the past, Paul. There's a shop in Ashville, NC, called Battery Park Book Exchange. They have lovely nooks and corners you can hide in ( literally ) if you so desire. The stair cases creak. The wood floors creak. The shelves are old. The smell is history i aged leather.
