Lift It Up Again: The Sweetest Sound
I went down into the basement in the two story home and met the bredren. The dread was sitting down on a stool next to two tall racks filled with music equipment which was probably worth tens of thousands of dollars. "Wah gwan twin," followed by a smile and dap. I dey breds. We sat down and conversed about music, sound clashes and shoes. We both had a love for wearing Clark's and Bally shoes. "Listen me twin, I have all this sound equipment that I was thinking about getting rid of." Why would you want to sell, just bring the sound outside and play it. "Would you select it?" As much as I would love to, you know I have my own sound. Let's have a block party and I will find a person to select the sound for you and teach them about music, how to dj and select music for sound clashes. What ever you do, do not sell anything. "Alright my lawd, respect to the maximum."
A few weeks passed and we had a block party on a Saturday in the sweltering heat of summer on Union Street between Troy and Brooklyn Avenue. The sound had all the latest electronics and sounded heavy, and when I placed the Technique SL1200 arm and needle on the forty five inch record ”Lift It Up Again" by Pinchers. The entire block erupted, you could hear the sounds of pram pram, bo bo, booyakah and raaaaah finger shots fill the air. Wheel up, pull up, forward and itch it up mi selecta followed. The sweet sounding voice of the latest reggae singing sensation layered by the robust and rambunctious bass line of the answer riddim commanded such a frenzy. That was the inauguration of the sound that the world would come to be known as Earth Ruler.
