Beautiful in Our Shared Brokenness
Hearts break and mend, then break again.
Should we want it another way?
In hurts we become real. In loss, we recognize what was held.
I’ve hurt others with intention and unknowing,
accruing debts I cannot repay.
In shared pains and recognition of sin
might we find compassion for another to lessen our debt?
Lend me your brokenness.
I’ll make no promises or payment,
offering only the slight chance that, for a moment,
our tarnished souls might be whole in their physical expressions.
Is it this hope in a higher purpose
that makes our frail human reflections beautiful
as we gaze into waters suddenly calmed?
Is it this that drives us toward each other instead of away?
Might we become lovely in our union?
Spread your broken parts over me like a blanket, woven with grace and care.
Your face, lined with past lovers, hovers over my heart pounding with anticipation.
From your eyes a single salty tear falls to my chest in recognition of this imperfect union.
Warm me with your healing heart and I’ll lend you mine, naked and exposed.
Let us mend each other for a few moments, beautiful in our shared brokenness.
