WALK AMONG THE TOMBS
AWAKENING
Taking a few minutes
to escape from the asphalt
world, media hype, and
pressure for more,
I spend time walking
through the graveyard with
tombs dating back 3 centuries.
The weather has worn the epitaphs
off hundreds; time has faded
the angels engraved in stone.
The newer graves have pictures
of the departed loved ones.
Some graves cost thousands,
vaults millions, and some free
to paupers. All share the same end:
DEATH
Millions have been spent
on fading and dying flowers.
The most frequent words are
"Rest in Peace." "An angel in heaven."
"Beloved...mother...father...
son...daughter...friend..."
Not one grave referred to the
deceased as "mean, bad, unloved,
or glad you are gone."
Everyone who dies is given sainthood
Yes, life is a great teacher but
death is graduate work. The tombs
are the textbooks for reality.
What will a loved one or stranger
place on my tomb? What will viewers
in future years read or see?
Take a walk among the tombs and
perhaps your values may change.
Denial of death is America's
new pass time.
