New Order
Aftershocks from that
Earth-shattering phone call
Continue to rattle
The walls of my mind
Five months later,
and counting
I can't remember
If I was
Waking from a dream
Or falling into one,
But I swear I held on
Tooth and nail
To the hope
Of a nightmare's end
That never came
Pleas and tears
In those long nights
Fell on seemingly
Otherwise occupied ears
And echoed
Into the ceiling
Reflecting, I'm left here
Shivering
As the cold seeps in
From the lack of warmth
Of a bright smile
The light that shone
Against great odds,
Often defying reason
Has yet to meet
Its equal
How I envied it
How I mourn it
Though the dust is
Slowly beginning to settle
I'm still struggling
To come to grips
With this new order
And I find
(Somewhat disturbingly)
That life goes on
Without you in it.
