Meditation On Goodbyes
When I held you
Closely
How were we to know
When the hungry-eyed stars
Would stop dancing in our eyes?
As I meditate
With my aloneness
Flowers decorate the entirety
Of my skin
Awakening each springtime moment
From the dizzying slumber of the ordinary
As the bountiful scents of geranium and lavender
Begin to quench the thirst of belonging
I ponder how poetry was the only way
You knew how to love
Building those burning forests of desire
Ever higher, ever higher
Yet never truly trusting in the benevolence
Of earthbound intentions
So I hold you in my thoughts delicately,
Knowing you needed to be free
Embracing the circle of wonder
A final time
And letting the answers
Drift away like smoke upon the horizon
When I held you
Closely
How were we to know
When the hungry-eyed stars
Would stop dancing in our eyes?
