Cancelled in Grey: a Nuanced Journey

Manufacturing  
my own unique  
reaction to  
the woke wave  
 
I said cure racism  
by admitting  
 
WE ALL  
 
came from  
black ancestors  
in the cradle of  
humanity  
 
Thus obeying the  
command of the Bible  
“Honor thy mother and father”  
 
AND THUS  
curing racism!
 
Most of us have  
our reasons  
 
to be challenged  
with work or friends  
 
which is what makes  
cancellation such  
a big deal  
 
as it bludgeons  
our fragile efforts  
 
So that’s where  
cancellation found me  
 
on the fringes  
of deep underground poetry  
 
Not a perfect socialite  
 
...vulnerable  
to the intolerant  
social justice  
of liberal poetic society  
 
I reacted instantly  
to the cancel culture  
when it struck  
 
and began to dialogue  
falsely believing  
true dialogue was the goal  
 
...not affirming beliefs  
built on behalf of  
others’ circles of friends  
 
I chose to lose mine  
in serendipitous  
self-defeat  
 
I’m an avoidant  
personality  
 
...so letting go was  
more than easy  
when choosing  
...friends or truth  
 
But in the ensuing weeks  
I found that  
I had saved myself  
for a better life  
 
than a nuanced  
cancel in grey  
 
I have found  
another community  
to share my poetry with...
