kissing sense

a young maiden's coming-of-age

“The first kiss can be as terrifying as the last.”
—Daina Chaviano

if a baby knew
what a kiss could do,
would the breast be more
of a place secure?
i'm a big girl now
but i don't know how,
for i've kept myself
on a foolproof shelf.
is it of the tongue
or just of the lips?
is it of the bosom
or of the hips?

is it heaven-sent
or is it hell-bent
not to satisfy
but to make you die?
does a girl's first kiss
make her heartbeat miss?
does she lose her soul
when she gives the whole
of her private nerves
to the urge she serves?
kisses on the cheeks
must be stolen peeks
of a world unknown
where ripe seeds are sown!
when a kiss falls short,
should a girl abort
future promises
—quell rash phantasies?
virgin lips are pure,
yet am i unsure
their incontinence
makes much kissing sense.
kiss me, if you dare,
for my lips are bare
—not to be ignored,
but to be explored.
take them a la carte
(you could steal my heart!);
mind those sharp, white teeth
ling'ring underneath:
love is not time's fool
—safer yet to drool...
