There is a muddy mark
The road steams from rain and heat
Red clay streaked
Carolina
Muggy now in its overcast
Where once a car had passed
And stepped aside some rain soaked form
Forlorn
Foot slipping the ditch which bordered
Loosing a clod
So that rain the muddy footprints dissolved
A few
Then they like he disappeared further on
And he neither here nor there was gone
The bend in the road is all
And glistening leaves drooping dark rain wet boughs
Now all is past
Save a muddy mark beside the grass
The road red clay streaked
To dry and powder in the heat
The road steams from rain and heat
Red clay streaked
Carolina
Muggy now in its overcast
Where once a car had passed
And stepped aside some rain soaked form
Forlorn
Foot slipping the ditch which bordered
Loosing a clod
So that rain the muddy footprints dissolved
A few
Then they like he disappeared further on
And he neither here nor there was gone
The bend in the road is all
And glistening leaves drooping dark rain wet boughs
Now all is past
Save a muddy mark beside the grass
The road red clay streaked
To dry and powder in the heat
