Green Leaf
I can tell by punctuation and line breaks
that the poet wants me to notice the green.
Not the green of the crabgrass of the lawn,
Nor the green of the monkey grass along the borders,
But the green of the leaves of the rose of Sharon.
Though not all the leaves,
Rather, one particular leaf
which is mostly green
and has yellowed around its edges.
How that single leaf among all the others
is fighting to survive though it is slowly dying.
I can also tell that the poet wants me to consider
whether the other leaves are aware
of the dying leaf’s plight
and if they know that they will
one day share the same fate?
In this way the poet makes a jump
and hopes I will make the connection
that he is really talking about me and you
and our fate.
