you are my blackbird
i am your dove
we cannot allow ourselves
to fall in love
i am locked in your eyes
as the moon to the sky
every star that shines bright
a softly placed sigh
when slowly the darkness
falls away like a feather
my breeze, let me fly
we cannot be
together

Love doesn't necessarily means together,day and night are married but how often are they seen together. tight

Damn. This was tragic. I want to know why they can't be together, but then that would ultimately ruin this poem.
It's powerful in its simplicity, similar to "He loves me, He loves me not ..." and the pulling of flower petals. Or plucking of feathers inthis case.
You could replace that second "like" with "as". Poets get to comfortable with the word like when they really don't need it 99 out of 100 times.

there's no reason they cannot be together
i just felt in writing the poem it sounded better as a tragedy
