Gift Wrapping: A poem by Phillip for Skylee
Less skin than most covers her 5-foot frame
Warm to the touch, a living thing
Wrapping what is and what might become
From impassioned birth to her burial drum
That there’s a God who approves our love
Her skin confirms in every square inch
Salty glands cool our touch
A thousand nerve endings to feel as much
When we press our mass into mass
I pound against her unblemished wrap
Perfect packaging for fine cuts of meat
Oh God, her gift wrap! So salty and sweet!
Warm to the touch, a living thing
Wrapping what is and what might become
From impassioned birth to her burial drum
That there’s a God who approves our love
Her skin confirms in every square inch
Salty glands cool our touch
A thousand nerve endings to feel as much
When we press our mass into mass
I pound against her unblemished wrap
Perfect packaging for fine cuts of meat
Oh God, her gift wrap! So salty and sweet!
