TENSION IN THE JAW
Using the fused-together
Plastic and metal mouth
Of a cheap puller
I remove the staple
Which fires at the ceiling
PLINK!
Before it hits the bookcase
PLINK!
And finally the stack of documents
PLOP!
A few feet from my desk.
Last week one hit my eye
Which thankfully shut itself
Before I had any idea
What was happening.
Only minutes later
Did I realize
During a conversation
With a co-worker
That it was still there,
Dangling.
What is it with you and staples?
You asked me.
So much tension in them,
I figure-
Has to go somewhere.
