Too soon a stone

Oft I see the joyful scenes
of children as they smile
And taste the bitter broken dreams
that linger for a while

In truth I long for memories from
the time when I was young
Before the scars and iron bars
we used to laugh and run

Every gift that we obtain
is followed with a loss
Held tight in desperation with
no regard to what it costs

But then again was it not said
that growth is born from pain
The value of the journey lies
in how you play the game

Strange the thoughts that come to mind
as I sit and drink alone
Past friends and lovers rubbed so raw
from this heart to soon a stone
