Soft gamma ray repeater
Your luminosity was there, the math types say
But could not be discerned amid the halo that cloaked your presence
How did you get to be so bright
And yet so imperceptible
To my tired and weary eyes
Your short and turbulent life
As the brightest of the bright
Clouded by debris and other people’s clatter
Left-over primeval matter
Would it be wrong
To visit you not in dream
But to scorch myself on your hydrogen skin
Some time
But the fire in you died
Crashed
Imploded
Went the way of all bright things
Left behind a gapping hole
Darkness
And bleak velocities
Sometimes I wish I could make you understand
But you have dispersed
And, as I write, already coagulating
You are bound by another’s gravity
You will be reborn
My darkness, once again
Is all my own
But could not be discerned amid the halo that cloaked your presence
How did you get to be so bright
And yet so imperceptible
To my tired and weary eyes
Your short and turbulent life
As the brightest of the bright
Clouded by debris and other people’s clatter
Left-over primeval matter
Would it be wrong
To visit you not in dream
But to scorch myself on your hydrogen skin
Some time
But the fire in you died
Crashed
Imploded
Went the way of all bright things
Left behind a gapping hole
Darkness
And bleak velocities
Sometimes I wish I could make you understand
But you have dispersed
And, as I write, already coagulating
You are bound by another’s gravity
You will be reborn
My darkness, once again
Is all my own
