As So Often Happens
As so often happens day turns to night,
Life glides from one to other without seam,
We simply sense an absence of the light;
Reality attracts a bit more dream.
Our lives comprise many such transitions,
States disappear without a cogent end,
Action emanates from indecision,
Base-metal strangers transmute into friends.
One syllable of the words I’ve spoken,
Unknowing, may have made a sea-change start,
We cannot point a finger at the moment
Or separate a fragment from the heart.
Our lives are like waves upon an ocean,
Love is like a photon in a stream,
Spend a lifetime studying their motion
But never know what they really mean.
To understand the import of a moment
Our minds and bodies have to lose their steel.
We cannot just rely on observation;
Each time we learn to touch we learn to feel.
