Unrequited

This piece is very clever.  I also enjoyed how and why you wrote it from your author’s notes.  I’m always interested in finding out the inspiration behind a write, thanks for providing that.

I really liked the bit of darkness behind it, the heroine keeping a jar with collected hearts in it and reviewing them once in a while.  Being on the receiving end of an unrequited relationship, it is the worst!  However, I really appreciated how you ended your piece by the hero taking back his proffered heart and moving on!  It’s a great piece!  Happy Valentine’s Day. Thanks so much, Honoria, for reading and for your thoughtful comments. I've really enjoyed reading these old works, and think I'm somehow attracted to the formality of the poetry and the prose. Though this poem doesn't really reflect the formality.

I love old anthologies ( if it is an anthology ) of forgotten poetry books. They're often a treasure of exquisite language not often used in today's time!  

I think it's wonderful that you're finding it inspiring enough to compose your own. And this contains elements of witty contrasted with pain, and that always makes for an interesting contrast of read.

Yes...the writing in this anthology is "stodgy," yet just interesting. Beautiful in places.

That's Mary Elizabeth Lee (1813-1849) from a poem The Last Place of Sleep.
She was, according to Wikipedia, a delicate young lady.

Some day it will be our poems on these web pages saved to a flash drive - in a shoe box of junk purchased from an estate sale - that a future poet will delve into and be inspired by.  

I've always wondered what the purpose of "rhyming" words that look alike and your note just answered it. Thank you for this and the unique writing as always. :)

p.s. "an squat" should be "a squat"

I hope the digital archives will hold up like a book. I have some old writing efforts on floppy discs. The three inch ones. I wonder if they're intact.
Seems like only yesterday my Coleco computer recorded on a cassette tape.
I am that old.

well, this just made me smile. i like a good rhyme for the eyes on occasion. they make me smile in their absolutely not rhyming sounds.
