red hot acid vomit

lethargic lava
slowly cooled
like stubborn phlegm
on their sloping cheeks

O wow! You really took the time to look up cassava, Tallen! I had no idea its reference would trigger such interest.
Indeed, cassava was a staple of the Taino, the aboriginal people of Jamaica. If you've never had bammies a hot cake made from the grated, milk-expressed cassave trash/flakes), you ought to find where you might taste it -- perhaps from a Jamaican restaurant near you.
the tuber may be cooked and consumed the same way as our yams, as well. that way, though, it is rather bland in taste, although packed with nutrients.
