Hide and Seek

you counted to ten
one... two.. run
i found a nook between a dresser and a bookshelf
a game I always won

as I listened for your footsteps
i thought about how long it had been
since we jumped on trampolines
or swung on creaky swingsets
those days were brighter then

a hostage between two walls
to me was always fun
encapsulated in shadow
confined here by myself
hiding is my best friend
"ready or not, here I come!"

will you find me? will you free me?
searching can be a chore
explore my mind, I dare you
it's your only clue
nothing more

the longer I wait, the closer I get
to escaping this place of guilt and regret
was that a door? are you out of breath?
back to my corner, before you detect

when I am ready, I'll break from my hiding place
and give it all away
and we'll start a little race
catch me if you can
game over, you win

my days of darkness are scattered apart
the cobwebbed walls pull at my heart
so when you want me to hide again
you know what to do
count to ten
