Life Changing Moments

They say you never
Forget your first time
And that is so true

I will never forget
The first time
That I realized that
I am Black

It really changed my life

I was a bit of a late bloomer
Of couse I knew what black was
But I didn't really understand it
When I was younger
I didn't know what it means for my soul

But it did happen
Like most people
My first time was not
My best time
But it was eye opening

All this time
This was what is really
Going on between people
And I just experienced
the very same thing

My life is changing

I wish I could say for the better
But the looks people give me
Are so hard to get over
As if when others see me
On the streets
It's a walk of shame

It's as if everywhere I am
I am already at fault
By virtue of who I am
Fighting feelings of insecurity
For just being me

How my natural self looks
Has somehow given people
An opinion of who I am

You haven't heard me speak
Yet you already assume
That I am ignorant
And what's worse is that
A part of me is trying
To prove myself to you
Now that is the true tragedy

My life has really changed

My naivete cannot be taken back
I've already experienced this
And experience stays with you

You can only change
your perspective
On the matter
Who knows
Maybe the situation
will get better over time
I don't know
but I can only try

I can only try and Change my life
