Don't Reciprocate
Keep staying away from me as you do
My lingering confusion and attachment to you
Makes a wonderful little engine that keeps me on the move.
I don’t want the feel of love to come from your hands
Or for you to lead a dashing crusade of romance
Listen to my message: don’t reciprocate.
I hope I always feel the yearning
Towards a desired ending
So that I can keep creating
And one day win lots of fame.
For if my love were all requited
And in bliss we were united
To live contentedly, delighted
I’d die happy without a name.
My ego’s a growing little monster
Who wants his footprints in concrete.
He’s learned how to play and with a sneaky grin
Plans to pull out the rug from your feet.

Had to comment on this as it seems an attempt to manipulate circumstances beyond one's control to a self-serving and positive outcome. .(don't we all). As artists and leeches on the human experience. I don't think there is a pat formula to notoriety though, I think it might exist somewhere in becoming absorbed so much in the process of creation that you don't really about the outcome.

Don't care about the outcome I think you meant? That's true, from what I've seen.
This was mostly in jest - commentary on the trope: if I can't have what I really want, I'll be a monster and win everything else - or, said another way the Adele path: get your heartbroken, it makes you famous.
That and the fact that without heartbreak I probably would be too content to write any poems.

I can agree I think about love of the art as opposed to romantic love, but I thought perhaps you were being a bit playful. The rhyme scheme is quite eloquent.

You are right, I was being a bit sarcastic/too self-aware, making fun of the factime that we all know some well known artists' tropes: gets heart broken --> becomes famous... good relationship --> no more good art produced.
