Image for the poem and God said

and God said

and God said
let there be light and the power
of His might separated day from night. but men
love the darkness still, for their hearts harbour evil.
by their angry word they kill innocence upon the cross,
knowing not the only loss is the way their spirits toss in
the dark snares that they set. may the night never forget
how it makes frail spirits fret. cast not pearls before mad
swine, fermenting a bitter wine for the scraps on which they dine.
there’s no flicker in the dark:  filaments deprived of spark are like
hungry dogs that bark though their racket makes no sound
o’er the hills or on the ground. shades of colour are not
found where His Light does not appear.  bats and owls
find comfort there, where the light would
leave them bare.  bioluminescent man’s
metabolic reaction short of naked
vision span. venus gives no
g l i m p s e of sun where
thick a t m o s p h e r e
doth run that would leave all
life undone.  eighty metres
'neath the sea maximum
where light can flee, yet
the anglerfish can see!
lest your end be premature
let not night your days obscure
light is earth's God-given
