Stolen Identity
Why is it so hard for me to believe you're unreal?
Yet it was the easiest thing to let you steal
A heart and soul through a broken window
The face painted on a faceless mask in shadow
A photo stolen here and another one from there
Is there anything about you that is real?
Are you even you? Perhaps you're just a fantasy screw...
Can anyone say? Or even say your name and know
If the sound that slips across their lips
Could be a rhyme from some unknown poet, another fool
Who fell for your lies as he fell to his knees
When the gaze from your eyes made him whisper please
But fooled he was for yours were not the ones framed in red
But were stolen from a Clairol ad instead
Yet it was the easiest thing to let you steal
A heart and soul through a broken window
The face painted on a faceless mask in shadow
A photo stolen here and another one from there
Is there anything about you that is real?

Many put pictures up to portray an image they like to be. I like to be me, even tho no easy task.

I put up Snoopy playing piano, but I do not claim to be Snoopy. I do however play the piano.
Some put up photos of actual people and live behind that mask. There's a difference between expression and deception...

welcome to the internet, where men are men, women are men and underage girls are the FBI!
tho in all seriousness, catfishing is an inexplicable phenomenon... someone probably bored with their life and then decides to troll, not considering there's another person who might become emotionally invested...
... people are {mostly} just shite tbh
it's great write, very relevant... too many people get screwed like this.
feel like i need the disclaimer that this is me lol

It's big business now too. I had joined a dating site a while back and got about 20 messages the first 2 days I was there only to find out they were all scammers from Ghana, Africa. Fortunately I did not give hem any money or personal info. I have some very good photo search apps now to see who is a photo thief and who might actually be real.
Although I don't have my own pic up now, for most of the past 8 years I have been on dup, I have used a real photo of myself here.
Your comment made me laugh. It reminded me of when I was listening to the song Lola by the Kinks and realized what it was about. Lol!
Thanks for commenting katja!

Unless he/she is a superhero. Then you're never sure which one is their true identity...

Ah, the beauty and pain of the 'net, JJ. Its not fun and games all the time thats for sure. I refer to "facebook" as Fakebook 90% of the time due to 90% of the people I know that are on "facebook" have very different lives then they portray online. Its rather amusing at times and at times its upsetting. Nice write JJ.

Thank you A! The first thing I do when I meet someone online that sparks the embers of a relationship is ask about their facebook page. I don't expect them o give it up right away, but I find out a little about the person by how they respond and if they say no, they usually have a telling tale to go along with it.
I, on the other hand, always tell them what it is. I post my facebook page here in my profile. I have nothing to hide and my family and friends in real life are on there. I couldn't lie about anything if I wanted to because it would be too easy for them to check. If they wanted they could post what I said on my page for everyone I know to read. They could PM the people closest to me and ask all sorts of questions without my even knowing it. Though I'm sure I'd be getting a bunch of phone calls about who she is and why she's asking all about me... I'm an open book and have published 2 that my family and friends have read. If my poetry was anything less than honest they would call me out on it. So when others keep secrets from me, I become suspicious. Not overly so, because I respect their privacy and concerns for their own safety in this crazy world of psychopaths we live in. But that is just another reason for me to let them see the real world of me. If I were a murderous lunatic, I'd be outed on my own facebook page. But it's one thing to want to protect oneself and hold back information until you have a chance to get to know a person better and feel somewhat sure they are who they claim to be and yet another thing altogether to be a complete fraud and deceive someone you know is becoming emotionally attached. To continue that deception and not have a care for that persons heart makes them mud form only worms and pigs to thrive in...
