Biophilia

Poetry is motion
Words creeping and stalking
Like a gray heron in the shallow waters of a pond
Language running down a dreary wet street at night after rain
Poetry becomes the observer’s eye
Capturing movement for the reader to witness
It offers an illusion where expectations are defied
Poetry is an aesthetic surprise for the reader not paying full attention
And not looking for the unexpected
The reader becomes a travel companion, an adventurer
An explorer looking for an evolutionary advantage
Adding the dimension of time and searching for descendants
The ancestry of poetic history in the story
The poem in revolt of nature through metamorphosis
Magically imaginative with one thing changing into something else
The language grasping more and more to capture attention
To gain an emotional response
The poet developing new ways of thinking about familiar objects
Which belong to another moment in our understanding
In a world of spirits to see whether the reader will remain the same
Or change into something different
With a new sensory experience
While everything changes around us
The poet’s narration being the only constant
It contradicts every instinct
That we must go near something so strange to us
Visiting a universe that is as real as ours
The poet’s imagination providing words
To make meaning and offers sensations to the reader
The joy of the mystery and escaping this world through the poem
We chase the poem expecting to see the preconceived
But in chasing shadows of words we instead find
A fieldstone, a bird, a lizard,
A diamond, an ibex or even a red herring
